Fort Worth Debuts New Bike-Share Program After 10+ Years with Lyft Partnership

Spread the love

In 2025, Fort Worth is rolling out a fresh fleet of bikes as the city introduces a new bike-share system, marking a significant upgrade after more than a decade. Partnering with Lyft, the revamped program officially launched on January 15, with Trinity Metro—the city’s transit service—leading the charge.

The old system, which had been in place for over ten years, had become outdated and inefficient, according to Shawn Tubre, Trinity Metro’s bike director. He explained that by the time he joined the agency two years ago, the bikes were frequently problematic, with issues like broken chains and faulty pedals. “People wanted a bike-share system, but not the one we had,” said Tubre. “So, we decided it was time for a complete overhaul.”

A Whole New System: Bikes, Stations, and an App

With a new partnership with Lyft Urban Solutions, Fort Worth is getting a complete revamp. The system will feature a fleet of entirely new bikes, upgraded stations, and an innovative app that promises to make the rental process easier than ever.

The new fleet will consist mostly of electric bikes, with 10% of the bikes still being traditional pedal-powered models. The e-bikes are designed with pedal assist technology, meaning the electric motor kicks in when you pedal. “The boost adjusts based on how fast you’re pedaling,” explained Caroline Samponaro, Lyft Urban Solutions’ head of external affairs. “It’s tailored to your speed, so if you’re going uphill, you’ll get more assistance.”

Along with the new bikes, the launch includes a redesigned app for a smooth, seamless rental experience. Riders can simply scan a QR code to unlock a bike and go on their way, making bike rentals as easy as a tap on the phone.

Predictable Stations and Affordable Pricing Options

One of the standout features of the new program is the installation of 400 permanent bike stations. This ensures that riders can easily find a bike and know exactly where to return it, offering a level of reliability similar to public transit. “Much like transit, riders will have a predictable place to check out and return bikes,” said Samponaro.

The new bike-share program also introduces a flexible pricing structure to accommodate different needs. Instead of being limited to day passes, riders can now choose from several options, including:

  • $2 for a 30-minute ride
  • $25 flex pass for 200 minutes of ride time
  • $125 annual pass for unlimited 60-minute rides
  • $10 EBT annual pass offering unlimited 60-minute rides for qualifying riders

Overage fees will apply, but the new structure allows for more flexibility and affordability. “You can hop on a bike and get anywhere in Fort Worth for just $2,” said Tubre. Whether commuting to downtown or exploring the Near South Side, the new bike-share system makes it easier to get around.

Looking Ahead: A Vision for Growth and Expansion

The new system is expected to be fully operational by mid-April, with all bikes on the ground and ready for use. The revamp, which cost $2.3 million, was funded internally by Trinity Metro. However, Tubre noted that as the system expands, the agency will seek additional funding through grants and partnerships to support future growth.

“We want people to use these bikes for everything—commuting, recreation, and more,” said Tubre. “This is a step toward a healthier, more connected city.”

With the new bike-share program in place, Fort Worth residents and visitors can look forward to a modern, reliable, and eco-friendly way to get around.
