Aventon’s Strategy for Surviving Tariffs: The Big Moves by a Leading U.S. E-Bike Brand
Last Updated on May 4, 2025 by Kristina
Aventon, one of the largest electric bike brands in the U.S., is pulling back the curtain on how it’s responding to the tariffs impacting the industry. As the trade war set off by the Trump administration continues to disrupt the e-bike market, the company’s actions show how even major players are shifting to keep their bikes on the road and prices manageable for consumers.
Navigating the Shift in Manufacturing
The rising threat of tariffs on Chinese imports forced Aventon to rethink its entire production strategy. While China has long been the base for e-bike manufacturing, the possibility of heavy tariffs—especially on the components that make up an e-bike—was a looming problem. As a result, Aventon began looking to Southeast Asia for manufacturing alternatives.
Countries like Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia have become increasingly attractive options, despite many of the factories being owned by Chinese investors. Even though these locations offer some advantages, there are challenges: key e-bike parts like motors and batteries still come from China, meaning parts need to be shipped to Southeast Asia before being assembled and sent to the U.S. This multi-step process adds up to 50 extra days of shipping time compared to direct manufacturing in China, creating a logistical challenge for companies like Aventon.
Can Pricing Stay the Same?
Aventon’s strategy to avoid passing costs onto consumers has been to absorb many of the added expenses. While this has helped keep their prices stable, the company is quick to point out that the tariffs on e-bikes—especially those from China—are significant. A 170% tariff on Chinese e-bikes (comprising both Section 301 and retaliatory tariffs) is a huge hurdle, and even though Southeast Asian-made bikes are subject to a more manageable 10% tariff, that could change quickly.
Aventon’s message to consumers is clear: the tariffs are paid by importers, not the manufacturing countries, and those costs eventually trickle down to the end buyer. Despite this, the company is absorbing some of the increases to maintain affordability for U.S. buyers. In early 2025, Aventon shifted its entire production to Thailand, investing in new manufacturing relationships and absorbing a 10–15% rise in costs.
Will E-Bikes Be Made in the U.S.?
While Aventon isn’t considering U.S.-based production right now, the company hasn’t ruled it out in the future. The main issue? A lack of domestic supply chains for critical e-bike parts, which are still heavily dependent on China. Without a reliable source of components within the U.S. and with hefty tariffs on the parts that do come in, it simply isn’t feasible. However, Aventon says that should the tariff situation change, they might look at assembling bikes on a small scale in the U.S. as a first step toward domestic manufacturing.
Conclusion
Aventon’s approach to handling the ongoing trade war and tariff situation reveals just how complicated the global e-bike supply chain has become. By moving production to Southeast Asia, absorbing some of the increased costs, and working to keep prices accessible, Aventon is doing its best to keep up with shifting policy changes and market pressures. The future of U.S. e-bike manufacturing remains uncertain, but for now, Aventon is committed to making it work for both their bottom line and their customers.
